  • Growing Up: Time only flies when you throw your watch!

Written by Gwen / 8 days ago / 1 Comment

When I was 16, I wanted to be 18. At 18, I wanted to be 21. To me each age meant I was grown; what I never considered was the growth I needed between them - because maturing is a process that brings along two friends: responsibility and challenges.

Every professional or personal challenge I experienced and every lesson I learned was typically about me recognizing and managing the lines in my life: learning when to cross them, when to draw them and when to read between them.

During my professional growth, I learned:
    • The line between independent and ..

  • YAPstar Twitter account = feed from yapstar.org

Written by Maddie / 14 days ago / 1 Comment

Little experiment with the @YAPstar Twitter account.  I've set it up so the RSS feeds from the YAP calendar and also from the Recent Activity stream go to the Twitter account (the blog already did).  It's set up to ping hourly at the most so you definitely will not be deluged with tweets, but of course if it's annoying or if you have feedback of any kind please let me know and I'll adjust.  I think it's pretty cool already though, as it pings when someone new joins or when a discussion thread is replied to and I swear there's already ..

  • If Her Walls Could Talk . . .

    Written by Lydia / on 08/01/2010 / 0 Comments

Recently, my heart was broken, AGAIN, as I sat mesmerized by the story of Yeardly Love, a 22 year old University of Virginia lacrosse player, who was allegedly killed by her ex-boyfriend George Huguely, also 22, who admitted having had a "violent fight" with her. My heart literally squeezed shut at the thought of Yeardly's mother who, I imagine, was traumatized by the horrific news and details of her daughter whose body was found in a pool of blood.

Yeardly is amongst countless young women whom are trapped in the never ending cycle of dating violence-a pandemic that is striking our ..

  • Networking: Hate to miss it, but I really don't want to go!

    Written by Gwen / on 07/20/2010 / 0 Comments

Networking is touted as the best resource for professional success and personal growth. Whether you are looking for a job, professional development, business opportunities or shared-interest socializing, networking is said to be the key. But like any other key, it doesn't work unless it clicks.

What clicks for an intellectually curious introvert like me are organized interactions that engage through knowledge (real problem solving) and sincerity. In other words, if you want to engage me, your pitch must make sense. You can't sell me dog food if I don't have a dog.

When I first ventured into business networking, I ..
